An antique Derby Crown Porcelain Company VictoriaDanish. An antique Derby Crown Porcelain Company “Victoria” shaped, chain link border, not pierced, “Danish dessert plate, flowers by (John Porter) Wale”, pattern number 1736, made at Osmaston Road. Dimensions: 8 11/16” diameter and 1 1/16” height. The plate is marked in puce with the Derby Crown Porcelain. An antique Derby Crown Porcelain Company “Victoria” shaped, chain link border, not pierced, “Danish dessert plate, flowers by (John Porter) Wale”, pattern number 1736, made at Osmaston Road. Dimensions: 8 11/16” diameter and 1 1/16” height. The plate is marked in puce with the Derby Crown Porcelain Company backstamp with printed date cypher for 1887, 1736, v and three dots triangle shape, impressed “Derby,” a shamrock, and an unidentified mark. Condition: no chips, cracks, crazing, damage , or restoration.。John Porter Wale was born in Worcester, England in 1860, “the son of a cordwainer.”¹ He studied at the Worcester School of Art. In 1874, he was employed at the Worcester Royal Porcelain Company Ltd. (Royal Worcester). In 1878, he was employed at the Derby Crown Porcelain Company, Osmaston Road, Derby. He took lodging with Mr. and Mrs. Moffat, 4 Oxford Street, Litchurch, Derby.² His work included, and became known for, birds, butterflies, fish, flies, flowers, fruit, landscapes, leaves, mistletoe, seahorses, seascapes, and seaweed enamel on porcelain and painted on canvas. This versatility attributed to his becoming the head painter of the painting room. He designed numerous patterns in the Derby Pattern Books. He continued art studies in the evenings at the Derby School of Art. In 1896, Cuthbert Gresley was apprenticed to Wale as a china painter. At Derby, Wale’s work was displayed at the Royal Watercolourists Society.
